The winner of the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize is ‘Speech Therapy’ by Speech Debelle. The ‘anti hip-hop’, hip-hop artist from South London, scooped the now prestigious prize, for her debut album that was released in May and features (so far), three singles ‘Searching’, ‘The Key’, and ‘Go Then, Bye’. In addition to the prize, Debelle won £20,000… nice!
The winner was announced as ever by Jools Holland, during the ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Coverage for BBC One, was presented by Lauren Laverne, an extended broadcast of the awards will be shown on BBC Two at 11.40pm this Friday (11th September).
In typical Mercury Prize fashion, bookies failed to predict the winner AGAIN by opting for Florence + The Machine as it’s favourite. Better luck next time, eh?!
