Carrie Underwood is relatively unknown here in the UK, in America it is a different story. Since winning the fourth season of American Idol in 2005, her career has gone from strength to strength. This week she scores her second Billboard number 1 album and ensuring her the 11 million album sales soar even further.
Sonically, ‘Play On’ follows closely in the footsteps of her debut ‘Some Hearts’ and follow-up ‘Carnival Ride’. It’s a real mixture of up-tempo country numbers and moving ballads. There are various themes explored on this brilliant album… from cheating men, taking a chance on love, to the feeling of belonging and changing the world.
Every song is a winner from the lead single ‘Cowboy Casanova’ and ‘Quitter’ to ‘Songs Like These’ and title track ‘Play On’. The album’s real strengths lie in the ballads such as ‘Mama’s Song’, ‘Someday When I Stop Loving You’ and ‘Temporary Home’, which Carrie delivers with pure heartfelt emotion.
Overall, it’s another cracking album from Carrie… give it a go and you will not be disappointed.
