Is The New Mariah Carey Album Any Good?

Mariah Carey releases her twelfth studio album ‘Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel’ today. It has been given favourable reviews in the American press, where it was released in September. On paper, this is an album that sounds appealing even before giving it a spin. For example, it’s the first time that Mariah has used the same producers throughout an entire album, it’s the first time since 1993’s ‘Music Box’ that a Mariah album does NOT feature special guests. It’s the longest Mariah album with 17 tracks – but features 4 interludes and reprises, which is not a common feature on a Mariah album. Also, it’s the first time in years that we’ve seen Mariah look like the vision of her early nineties self with her trademark flowing dark curled hair.

All that aside, it’s the music that counts. I’d say it’s the most listenable Mariah album for a while… it’s the strongest album lyrically DESPITE some cringe worthy lyrics. It mainly stays in mid-tempo downbeat RnB territory and features a couple of piano led belters. There is plenty to maintain interest, the strengths lie in lead single ‘Obsessed’, which shows off a feisty Mariah. ‘Ribbon’, ‘Standing O’ and ‘It’s A Wrap’ are great and hit the spot. ‘Angels Cry’ and ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ are very strong traditional style Mariah ballads! At times though, some of the songs lack oomph, in particular ‘Candy Bling’ or ‘The Impossible’. Overall though, it’s a good, solid effort from Mariah…
