Uggh – award shows… Sia had the right idea, taking to Twitter to declare:
The thirtieth annual MTV VMA’s took place at The Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York last night. Throughout the years, the performances, controversies and antics separate these awards apart from others for instance – who could forget the Madonna, Britney, Christina kiss in 2003 or the Kanye West outburst in 2009. The musical performances are always high class and memorable, most notably Britney dancing with a python as she debuted ‘I’m A Slave 4 U’ in 2001 or Beyonce revealing her pregnancy upon finishing her performance of ‘Love On Top’ in 2011. Similarly, the show presenters are always risky and edgy with Russell Brand, Chelsea Handler and Jack Black taking hold of the host mantle across recent years.
So, here are our condensed highlights from the event last night…
Lady GaGa opened the show with her first large scale extravagant performance of ‘Applause’. Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Kanye West and Bruno Mars all did their thing during the show. Justin Timberlake played an extended fifteen minute hits medley before collecting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Justin sang, ‘Take Back The Night’, ‘SexyBack’, ‘Like I Love You’, ‘My Love’, ‘Cry Me A River’, ‘Señorita’ and ‘Rock Your Body’. Justin reunited alongside his *NSYNC bandmates, who appeared briefly to sing portions of ‘Girlfriend’ and ‘Bye Bye Bye’ before Justin continued with his latest solo work singing ‘Suit & Tie’ and ‘Mirrors’. Katy Perry then rounded off the evening with a knockout performance of her latest single ‘Roar’.
The VMA’s are known for their comebacks, where artists emerge after a break and 2013 was no different. *NSYNC reuniting momentarily grabbed much of the headlines but Danity Kane made waves with the confirmation of their reformation before announcing a new album would be released later this year. TLC also appeared, and which marked their forthcoming return to music.
